'I am sure you know how it goes…when you are a birder, your friends (non-birders) will tell bird stories, anecdotes or ask questions about birds they have seen. A friend of mine told me, she has been seeing small groups of Swallow-tailed Kites ( Elanoides furficatus ) in the general area; in south Florida. This happened two days ago and I said to myself, I can’t believe August is here.

If you have never been to the Tobago Main Ridge Forest Reserve on the island paradise that is Tobago, the answer is never. Since 1776 it has been protected land and the biodiversity there speaks volumes to what nearly 250 years of conservation can do. But I think that UNESCO explains things better than I can : The Tobago Main Ridge Forest Reserve is on record as the oldest legally protected forest reserve

'The male Western Tanager ( Piranga ludoviciana ) is unmistakable. He is the only tanager with strong wing bars, the anterior wing bar (median coverts) being bright yellow. Click on photos for full sized images. The female, this one spotted in my yard last September during fall migration, is a bit tougher to identify. She has kind of an olive-grayish back and scapulars with a greenish-yellow nape and rump.

'We recently went to visit a little farm, and they had a lot of fun chickens. This little guy however, was missing all of his feathers. I believe the breed of chicken is called Cochin, but as you can see, he doesn’t have the signature “pants” that his fellow chickens have. I think the poor little guy was moulting. 'Continued from: Birding Calchaqui valleys in northern Argentina. We began our next leg with our final destination the mountain town of Cachi. Not far from Cafayete the road changed to a dirt road with lots of dust and almost no vehicles. Soon we picked up on the side of the road a female Ultramarine Grosebeak and what appear to be a juvenile Lesser Seed-Finch.

'This morning it is drizzling. It rained hard last night, with hail and funnel clouds in Billings and lightning all along the storm’s path. The paper is reporting it as a mixed blessing — last week’s fires have been dampened and decreased, but that lightning could easily have sparked new flames where the vegetation is still seasonally dry.

'I love authors who make good on their promises. When I reviewed The Warbler Guide back in June, I noted that the one thing that would make this book perfect was an audio collection of the warbler chips and songs illustrated in the book by graphical illustrations called sonograms. I also noted that the authors, Tom Stephenson and Scott Whittle, had promised “a library of warbler songs and sounds” in early July.

'Pat O’Donnell over at Costa Rica Living and Birding maps out a potential hummingbird-only big day route that could net the ambitious birder forty species of hummingbird in one day in Costa Rica (and potentially more). That made me wonder – what is the single day record for seeing the most species of hummingbird? The answer, apparently, is a whopping 41 species !

'After all the excitement (such as it was) of last week it was nice to have an escape route from the city already lined up for the following weekend, a two night jaunt to the Marlborough Sounds. This scraggly collection of islands and deep long bays forms the tip of South Island closest to to North Island, but till this point my only experience of the area had been the long passage down Queen Charlotte Sound to reach the ferry terminal of Picton.
