We are on the go until usually around 1:30 give or take a herd of zebras blocking the road. I have managed to find two owls, the first was this pair of Verreaux’s Eagle-owls. I will try to get everything tallied as far as bird species goes tonight. I should be at about 140 African species both counted and photographed!

There were 12 Red-necked Avocet feeding in the ponds and along the fenceline there were Zebra Finch, Peaceful Doves and Diamond Doves nipping back and forth for water. We also soon realised that it would be advisable to go to bed when the birdlife went quiet, because the bird species we had seen so far would be up with first light!

Zebra Doves , Tree Sparrows , Pacific Swallows , Pink-necked Pigeons , Yellow-vented Bulbuls , Asian Koel , Spotted Dove , Rock Dove , Red Junglefowl , Oriental White Eyes and Black-naped Orioles were soon on our list. There are White-bellied Sea Eagles in the area and it is likely their nest. Common Sandpiper. Monk Parakeet.

There are often a pair of White-bellied Sea-Eagles present and they were there. White-bellied Sea-Eagle nest with Budgerigars above There were numerous Whistling Kites sitting in nests and we were intrigued to see that Zebra Finch had built their own nests in the base of the nest.

The road towards Geikie Gorge from Fitzroy Crossing is also worth taking slowly because there are some good species to be observed. There were small groups of Double-barred Finches, Zebra Finch and also Crimson Finches. I photographed one to show the brightness displayed, but for a better look at this species you can look here.

The birding is not exceptional, but you can easily see some of Singapore’s and South-east Asia’s more common species and it does throw up the occasional jewel. My personal list for Paser Ris runs to 75 birds over 15 visits that average out at around 25 species per outing. My favourite site in Singapore is Paser Ris. Spotted Wood-owl.

Betty’s Bay was also a great place to see all of South Africa’s cormorant species, including the endangered Bank Cormorant. We observed far fewer Lesser Flamingos, a near-threatened species. It was the first of six bustard species I would see over the course of both trips. And then there were the Flamingos.

As this African Green Pigeon shows, the color should offer good camouflage for species living on trees. In case you do not know that brimstone is sulfur, the Brimstone Canary brings the point home by having the Latin species name sulphurata. Due to a misunderstanding, this species is currently banned in Russia ( Swift Tern ).

There are often several noisy bird species about, but that is quite normal in the Western Australian bush. The finches are always well represented with Zebra Finch , Double-barred Finch and sometimes you are lucky enough to get brief glimpses of Pictorella Mannikins. Black-fronted Dotterel feeding.

We soon had a decent list in our notebook and there were a few bird species that we had not yet seen this year. One of the most efficient fishing birds on the river is the White-bellied Sea-Eagle. There is a good mix of bird species both large and small. Our walk downstream added a few more bird species including Zebra Finch , Purple-backed Fairywrens , Rufous Songlarks , Black-breasted Buzzard , Black Falcon and Common Greenshank. There were literally hundreds of Peaceful Doves , Diamond Doves and both Zebra Finch and Long-tailed Finch coming in to drink. As we scanned around the lake observing numerous bird species more and more species came in to drink and bathe. There were also Crested Pigeons and Bar-shouldered Doves. Australian Bustard drinking.

The first birds that we saw when entering the area were Black-faced Woodswallows , Galahs , Zebra Finch , Budgerigars and White-winged Trillers. These included the Nankeen Kestrel and the Wedge-tailed Eagle. It is always tricky trying to photograph a Wedge-tailed Eagle , but I did attempt it! Wedge-tailed Eagle.

I was planning a trip to South Africa, I had about five days to fill, I wanted to get a bunch of desert species (particularly the Springbok – not a bird) in a way that wasn’t too hard to reach from Johannesburg. And lo, it was good. I stumbled on Madikwe completely by accident. Springbok were one of my targets, and I got them!

Arriving at the rest area we added a Red-backed Kingfisher to our notebook closely followed by Diamond Doves , Zebra Finch and Crested Pigeons. It was in fact a White-browed Woodswallow and a species rarely seen in Western Australia. Native Mistletoe and Zebra Finch nest.

Zebra Finch , Star Finch , Double-barred Finch , Masked Finch , Pictorella Mannikins , Peaceful Doves , Diamond Doves , Bar-shouldered Doves and Crested Pigeons were constantly dropping to the water’s edge to drink. We have only ever observed this species in flight, so it was rather special. Among these bizarre plants we observed Orange Chats , Crimson Chats , Zebra Finch and Crested Pigeons. I didn’t just want to enjoy observing them at such close proximity, but hopefully get photographs without having to take them through the windscreen!

Brolga , Crested Pigeons , Peaceful Doves , Little Corellas , Zebra Finch , Cockatiels, Budgerigars and Galahs were present early in the morning and late in the afternoon when they came in to drink. Raptors are well represented in the area with Black Kites , Whistling Kites , Nankeen Kestrels and Wedge-tailed Eagles.

There were plenty of passerines among the bushes and trees when we wandered the edge of the lake including Yellow Chats , Jacky Winter , Brown Honeyeater , White-plumed Honeyeater , Singing Honeyeater , Yellow-throated Miner , Zebra Finch , Red-capped Robin , Restless Flycatcher and Spotted Bowerbird.

The flocks of these large birds were mostly close to the highway in the dry grass feeding and the Sarus Cranes were fewer than Brolga and often mixed among them, so you had to check each flock for both species. Silver Gulls , Crested Terns, Caspian Terns, Gull-billed Terns, Pelicans and a White-bellied Sea-Eagle were observed in this area.

There were a lot more species than we had initially expected and we soon added Grey-crowned Babblers , Willie Wagtail , Sacred Kingfisher , Australasian Pipit , Little Crow , Black-faced Woodswallow , Zebra Finch , Little Corella , Pallid Cuckoo , Spinifex Pigeon and Western Bowerbird to the list. The beats are famed for their inclusion on the nice side of the ledger and this month 9 of them shared 163 lists from 7 countries (Australia, Costa Rica, USA, UK, Serbia, China and Trinidad and Tobago) and accounted for 735 bird species. Mike doubled up with “smushed”, a new addition to the adjective list.

I mentioned recently about the arrival of the Black-tailed Native-hens at Bilyuin Pool this year, but of course there were many other species of birds to enjoy. Brown Falcons , a Brown Goshawk, Wedge-tailed Eagles and also a Nankeen Kestrel hunted in the general area of the pool and were seen regularly during the day.

We usually try and plan a route prior to the day with particular bird species in mind and also taking into account the tidal range for the day. We rarely see them so close to town.

On Christmas Day we did a bird list around Broome and although we also found over one hundred species on both that day and on New Year’s Day the lists were quite different. Once the land flooded the birds dispersed and we could no longer find species that had been relatively easy the week before.

Last year we were also halted by a badly deflated tyre , but it is only day one of the year and when you get over 100 bird species you really can’t complain. Last year we achieved 112 bird species on New Year’s Day and this year we achieved 117, but some of the easiest birds have completely eluded us. Wild Dingo.
