On my recent visit I managed to see specialties like Spotted Eagle Owls , Swee Waxbills , Cape Sugarbirds , Malachite Sunbirds and Cape Francolins. Spotted Eagle Owl. People go to Boulder’s Beach for one reason… penguins! But mostly, just drink in the penguins! African Penguin! Cape of Good Hope.

An absolute highlight were the African Penguins at Boulders Beach. The colony is a proper tourist attraction with an entrance fee and way too many people, but the penguins still make it worth going. The resident pair of Spotted Eagle Owls and I agree on this. Here are some of my sightings.

Penguins would need on site-freezers or other forms of strict climate control, and who would keep the Corvids from playing tricks and getting out of control? The Accipiters and other bird predators would either have to be prohibited from attending or at least need to be kept separate from the rest of the tasty looking attendees.

Aleksandar started birdwatching when he was 10, after a face-to-face encounter with an Erect-crested penguin. A Black-chested Buzzard Eagle ( Geranoaetus melanoleucus ) circled above us and a number of Brown-bellied Swallows ( Notiochelidon murina) were seen. It was a Plain-capped Ground Tyrant ( Muscisaxicola alpines ).

There are, for example, the Penguins and Diving Ducks. Eagle Owls are often seen hiding in small caves. You should know by now that there are a good number of birds that spend an appreciable amount of time underwater. This Rock Cod (Grouper) tends to hang out directly on the coral surfaces. Talk about having birds on the brain, huh.

Even better, at the end of the dock a large New Zealand Eagle-ray was feeding under the clear still water, and stayed there long enough for those who wanted to see it to come down. A final interesting bird was heard that night over another round of beer and wine, as several Blue Penguins made the bay their home.
