They include Black-footed Albatrosses , Laysan Ducks , and roughly 65 percent of the world’s Laysan Albatrosses. Yes, that’s what’s happening at Midway Atoll, a chain of islands in the Pacific Ocean managed by the U.S.

Midway, which was once a military facility, has long had mice and it once had rats, though they were eradicated in 1996. Because Midway is home to endangered species ( e.g. , Laysan Duck, Hawaiian Monk Seal), FWS must also comply with the Endangered Species Act (ESA). This will focus on the requirements of NEPA.

There are a few, mostly confined to domestic or game birds that people may be familiar with at all stages of their lives – young pigeons are squabs, ducks are duckings, swans are cygnets, geese are gosling. English has not been similarly encumbered with frivolous names for young birds of specific types.
