It took long enough but I have finally seen an Eurasian Wigeon in my home borough, at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge’s East Pond to be exact. It was nice to add bird number 284 to my Queens life list , though it seems kind of absurd that it has taken so long to see one of the most common of the uncommon ducks in Queens.

But his Best Bird of the Weekend was a dabbling duck he found on the East Pond of Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge, his first Eurasian Wigeon of the year! I was privileged to help my mother-in-law see her first Common Loon in its summer finery, but for me, the highlight amidst the myriad ducks and grebes was a new regiment of Ruddy Ducks in the waterfowl mix at Conesus Lake. I spent several hours of an otherwise excellent weekend dipping multiple times on a rare ABA Tufted Duck. Corey’s Best Bird of the Weekend was a cooperative Blue-gray Gnatcatcher at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge that contentedly foraged while Corey digiscoped. That’s a win in my book.

I am used to seeing young Gadwall at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge, sometimes under less-than-ideal circumstances , but I rarely get a chance to see an entire brood of ducklings close enough to get some pictures. Anas strepera is a common and widespread duck, breeding across northern Europe and Asia, as well as central North America.

Ditto for the feral Muscovy Ducks , though they are a bit less nice. The most likely bird would be Fulvous Whistling-Duck which I tried for and dipped on last year thanks to the refuge that was good for them being closed for hunting on the day that I made the attempt. Nanday Parakeets are nice , but introduced. But it will in January!

The gender of this duck drove my decision, since I swore I would not be moved to chase a drab eider hen, even if it would be a life bird. But on his boat ride around lower New York Harbor and Jamaica Bay on Sunday he found himself appreciating the Herring Gulls more than any other species. Is he becoming a larophile?

Mottled Duck ? I also spent a bunch of time on the East Pond at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge and, as usual, managed to see some birds on workdays. Then I slowed down a bit but still found an insanely good bird for Queens , chased a rare duck , went out to Montauk , saw a pelican , and nabbed a good goose in the Bronx.

When I go to Baisley, which is located in the neighborhood of South Jamaica, I know that I am, at the least, going to see at least ten species of waterfowl, a variety of gulls, some sparrows and other songbirds, and perhaps a raptor or two.
