The ORI maintains a research station in the Mission Valley of Western Montana, neighboring the Ninepipes National Wildlife Refuge. but a particularly outstanding one here in western Montana.

My cat stays inside, and my new dog Dublin has opened a series of delicate negotiations with the neighborhood free-roaming cats, meant to curtail any unfortunate incidents. Are invisible. I mean, I know they’re out there.

Yesterday I saw a Dark-eyed Junco while I was walking my dog. For some reason, this is the year that the masked butcherbirds have been around in my corners of Montana, with as many sightings for me in 2014 as in the rest of my life (including the other three years I lived in Montana) combined.

Night Moves

So it turns out dogs are useless. Or at least the four dogs in the house I’m staying at in Montana showed no particular reaction to the 5.8 earthquake and series of aftershocks that made the state wobbly in the early hours of Thursday morning. The Osprey at my old haunt in Dunrovin, being higher up, got rocked even harder.

A Snowflake’s Chance

As I bird, walk the dog or run errands, puffs of white float down on the breeze. The species that calls western Montana home is the black cottonwood, while plains and narrowleaf cottonwood call the rest of the state home. Up on Higgins near the book store it’s just the occasional bit of fairy floss angling down across my vision.
