I received this from the Humane Society regarding a program to premiere January 25 on Animal Planet. Tags: Animal Planet blood sport dog fighting. It's the first episode ever of "Animal Planet Investigates: Dogfighting Exposed." Unfortunately, I don't get Animal Planet, but I'm pleased to see them running edgier programming.

An enormous victory was achieved for animals this week when nearly 200 dogs and 54 cats were rescued from a North Carolina animal testing facility that closed its doors after an undercover investigation revealed apparent abuse of the animals by workers at the facility.

Mike Beebe has signed into law new animal-cruelty restrictions that make aggravated cruelty to cats, dogs and horses a felony on the first offense. Arkansas becomes the 46th state to make cruelty to animals a felony, according to the Humane Society of the United States.

Certainly, he's on his best behavior and the Humane Society is using him to battle dog-fighting rings. Those are questions that, barring a dramatic change of events, will be answered in another city in another season. I don't understand why there hasn't been more outrage or rowdiness. But where's PETA? I don't get it.

Today, while running in 84º heat (and excessive humidity), I noticed a dog lying on a slab of concrete in someone's back yard. It looked as though the dog was lying in the shadow of a basketball backboard. Sure enough, there was a black dog (a pit bull) lying in the three-by-three-foot shadow cast by a backboard on the concrete.
