A man walking his two small dogs is passing by the eagle, looking down at grass and not seeing the largest raptor in Europe. On my way back I will see a third eagle above the pond, intermediate in age between those two, perhaps in its 4th or 5th calendar year, most likely a subadult… with a yellow wing tag at its right wing!

In the morning, still sleepy, we enter the jungle, where a sounder of Indian Boars (a long-maned subspecies Sus scrofa cristatus ) is watching us, standing among the first trees, right next to the road. We are observing a Dhole , also called Asiatic or Indian Wild Dog. One White-eyed Buzzard has turned its back to us.

Driving north along the Ionian seacoast through the city of Igoumenitsa, there is a place where the main artery takes you right, further away from the sea – follow it for 150 metres (500 ft) and then turn left just before a small stadium. Well, this dirt track is only for dogs and birders, that is for sure.

Once I observed a man walking his two small dogs here, passing by a perched White-tailed Eagle but looking down at grass and not noticing the largest raptor in Europe at all. Personally I wasn’t happy, but I do not live there and do not have a septic tank in my backyard, so I felt that I had no right to complain.

Here go those moments of curiosity, in no particular order: Europe: And so, I was driving from Greece to Serbia… in central FYRO Macedonia, two birds were circling not far from the motorway… black and white… perhaps White Storks on migration? Europe: The sun is scorching the area, and the birds are nowhere to be seen.

There were grumpy old fishermen, fishing through the closed season when the fish enter the backwaters to spawn, but also carrying handguns on their belts and assuming that, being armed and dangerous, they have every right to the area. Hence, I had the be equally grumpy to explain to them that I had an equal right to be there (equal right?

In contrast, the Little Egret is mostly quiet, which is a good thing given that it sounds a bit like an asthmatic dog when deciding to be vocal. I am not a big fan of the Spotted Dove , though it has to be said that in the right light, it can also look quite nice.
