The northern half of the lake added Corn Bunting , European Turtle Dove , Dalmatian Pelican , Purple Heron , Eurasian Hobby , Eurasian Golden Oriole , Eurasian Green Woodpecker , and only the first of the several Masked Shrikes of the tour (cover photo by Kostas Papadopoulos).

Cattle Egrets are very common outside of the most urbanized areas. The Groove-billed Ani is an odd-looking member of the Cuckoo family. Golden-fronted Woodpeckers are exceedingly common here, both in the city and in the countryside. ” (Yes, that was a shameless plug!). They are residents, but not common ones.

Black-bellied Whistling-Ducks , Muscovy Ducks and Blue-winged Teals were around us, together with Green , Great and Little Blue Herons , Cattle and Great White Egrets , Black-crowned and Yellow-crowned Night-Herons , plus one locally rare Pinnated Bittern in the floating vegetation, as well as several dozen Neotropical Cormorants.

We started our Singapore bird list at Pasir Ris and leaving the train station we were delighted to see several Cattle Egrets on the grass and several photographers. There is a massive nest at the top of a tower beside the Sports Centre and a family of Monk Parakeets have taken up residence. Monk Parakeet.

We were able to take a thoroughly enjoyable boat ride on Lake Chamo, whose shores teem with birds, including such typical African species as African Fish Eagle, Goliath Heron the world’s largest, Yellow-billed Stork and the incomparable Hamerkop , a species in its own family. A Konso village perched atop a terraced hill.

It didn’t take much imagination to name Cowbirds or Cattle Egrets or Cattle Tyrants , but there’s more fantasy, even more wit, involved in the naming of other bovine birds. The naming of the hornbill family is a bit farther fetched. They’re all named for livestock.

We got particularly great looks at Guira Cuckoo at Pousada Piuval, a resort that is also a cattle ranch; they were active all day, even after many of the birds that gathered in the early morning dispersed, often whistling loudly from the fence posts. Favorite Woodpecker: This is a toughie.
