As soon as we had parked beside the lake, we saw a wide variety of migratory ducks: Canvasbacks, Gadwalls, Blue-winged Teals, American Wigeons , and even a pair of Redheads. Gadwalls flew overhead The Canvasbacks stayed on the water.

Hawking for Nighthawks

Especially as we were at the time about to experience a rapidly advancing tropical storm. Scores of Black-bellied Whistling Ducks circled overhead, these vocal ducks are often hunted illegally here so it was refreshing to see so many. Striated Heron in breeding plumage – extra plumes and blue lores.

A Gathering at Colusa National Wildlife Refuge

I was pleasantly surprised to see that Colusa NWR was beginning to fill its impoundments during this drought, and there were quite a few ducks and geese present. There were not only Cattle Egrets and Great Egrets ( Ardea alba ) but Snowy Egrets ( Egretta thula ) as well. Click on photos for full sized images.
