Still, I was nervous when I pushed a collection of highly-qualified friends (four ornithologists and a botany professor) to accompany me to the small San José de las Torres reservoir, just above the city of Morelia. Two Ospreys flew overhead, turning up again and again to fish on this small body of water.

Black-bellied Whistling-Ducks , Muscovy Ducks and Blue-winged Teals were around us, together with Green , Great and Little Blue Herons , Cattle and Great White Egrets , Black-crowned and Yellow-crowned Night-Herons , plus one locally rare Pinnated Bittern in the floating vegetation, as well as several dozen Neotropical Cormorants.

It lies adjacent to Nechisar National Park, where the lone wing of the mysterious Nechisar Nightjar was collected in 1990. Heading south on a good surfaced road, we made slow progress through the herds of cattle, donkeys and goats that thronged the highway, until we finally reached the land of the Konso.

During this time, the fish trapped in the shrinking pools of water attract hordes of herons, egrets, storks, and other wetland species. The star of such huge concentrations is the massive Jabiru , towering over a diverse collection of South American waterbirds such as Sunbittern , Plumbeous Ibis , and Southern Screamer.

A few Lesser Kestrels by the dyke wall, then a Black-eared Wheatear at some cattle fencing. In my homeland, some 800 km / 500 mi further north, these ducks are common on migration but very rare in the breeding season and I realized that these are my first young birds – ever. This year, we had about 65 dead pelicans.

Arriving in Singapore we soon collected our bags and got ourselves a NETS card for travel on public transport and to also use in supermarkets. We were met by several Cattle Egret in beautiful breeding plumage feeding on the grass right next to the train station. Due to the fact it was not yet 07:45am it was a S$1.09

Even collecting one piece after another, I didn’t manage to see the whole picture, but after a lot of effort, I collected enough pieces to ID the Eastern Olivaceous Warbler , only the first of a dozen that will be chock chock chocking from fruiting mulberries. Below legal size for humans is still legal for pelicans.
