Brown Pelicans are quite popular in Louisiana. One of the state’s nicknames is “The Pelican State,” the bird is on the state’s flag, the state seal, the state painting (yes, apparently states have official paintings), as well as on one of Louisiana’s bicentennial coins.

Spoon-billed Sandpiper Baby Boom … in Great Britain?

It’s a bang-up breeding year for super-endangered birds! First, wildlife officials in Louisiana announced the first successful wild Whooping Crane nest in that state since 1939. The species, which migrates from the Russian Arctic to Southeast Asia, is down to about 200 breeding pairs in the wild, due to habitat loss and poaching.

Maley then goes on to examine the hybrid zone between Clapper and King rails in Louisiana, finding that the hybrid zone is very narrow (about 4 kilometers, or 2.5 These are brightly colored birds that breed in freshwater environments.

Spoonbills are ibises with big flat bills

The Early Migrating Wood-Warblers

What we don’t get to hear is them singing, as they seem to only sing once they reach their breeding grounds. Louisiana Waterthrush are a wonderful early migrant that announce themselves with their clear song. And having another breeding wood-warbler would certainly be nice, wouldn’t it?
