It’s a bang-up breeding year for super-endangered birds! First, wildlife officials in Louisiana announced the first successful wild Whooping Crane nest in that state since 1939. The species, which migrates from the Russian Arctic to Southeast Asia, is down to about 200 breeding pairs in the wild, due to habitat loss and poaching.

Sitta canadensis isn’t just irrupting out of its far northern home but exploding southward, with reports in every southern state except for Florida, including birds on the outer banks of North Carolina, on Grand Isle, Louisiana, in a suburb of Atlanta, and on the Gulf Coast of Texas. Other species such as Magnolia Warbler , Cape May Warbler , Yellow Warbler , Worm-eating Warbler , Wilson’s Warbler , Louisiana Waterthrush , and Yellow-breasted Chat are recorded annually in small numbers. In addition to these widespread species, Common Yellowthroat and Northern Waterthrush are reliably seen in the right habitats.

Fish and Wildlife Service has proposed relocating the 14 Whooping Cranes that live in Kissimmee Prairie, which includes the pair I saw, and relocating them to Louisiana. It has always been a difficult bird to find, even when abundant. John James Audubon first heard the sparrow in July, 1944, on a buffalo hunt in North Dakota. I don’t know.

The source of this ranking, BirdLife International, lists Bolivia as currently having 1,439 bird species, including 18 breeding endemics. of Louisiana State University is a long-time member and currently Acting Chair of the SACC.
