Forest cover in both species’ ranges is being destroyed at an unsustainable rate and these birds’ populations are dwindling.

The little stiff-tails are almost year-round at Jamaica Bay though almost all leave to breed in the summer and in the depths of winter, when the ponds are almost completely frozen, they tend to head for open water. He lives in Forest Hills with Daisy, their son, Desmond Shearwater, and their two indoor cats, Hunter and B.B.

I chalked up 132 species in a pretty relaxed eight days, during which birds shared the agenda with culture. With 154 eBirded species almost single-handedly spotted by the UK expat Geoff Laight, the Paljuvi is the latest addition to the top-5 list. With 154 eBirded species, the Beljarica shares the 4th place on the list.

Errol Fuller’s The Passenger Pigeon is a beautifully illustrated, elegantly written “celebration” of the passenger pigeon and the artists who illustrated and photographed the species. There were two species there, even, of a type I had never heard of. You’ll find pardalotes over most of Australia, but only four species in all. One of those species, the Forty-spotted Pardalote , is found only in a small part of Tasmania. It was, recently, pardaoltes that got me thinking about this. What a treat!

She doesn’t know the species till it emerges, almost dreamlike, from the heavy glare of the sun. Fox encounters 69 species, some singly, some in huge feeding or migrating flocks. She’s described conservation successes in detail–the Bald Eagle, the Short-tailed Albatross, now protected in Japan.

European settlement in Australia has been the cause of the decline of a variety of bird species and if not directly, then indirectly by the introduction of other species that have been the cause of their decline.

Not a cover species The Black Kite is not actually black, but of course, misleading bird names are not exactly rare. Maybe those should be protected too? It goes without saying that our three breeding species of mergansers in the United States are amongst the most brilliantly colored birds we have. Common , Hooded and Red-breasted Mergansers all breed here, but Red-breasted is the more northerly of the group. This is where they are truly effective and amazing hunters.
