A lovely looking and distinctive sounding bird (so they say, I sadly have not seen one…yet), the Kirtland’s Warbler can only be found during its breeding season in Jack Pine forests 5 to 20 years old in the northern Lower Peninsula of Michigan. Previously, even researchers had problems getting access to nesting Kirtland’s Warblers.

These Lark Buntings were too occupied with gathering food to pay much attention to us as we walked along a road between farm fields; there was undoubtedly a nest nearby, in a scape on the grass, so we took our photos and walked on. Today's New York Times gives us Adam Shriver's Op-Ed " Not Grass-Fed, But at Least Pain-Free ," which presents its dilemma at the end: If we cannot avoid factory farms altogether, the least we can do is eliminate the unpleasantness of pain in the animals that must live and die on them. It would be far better than doing nothing at all.

Tommy Thompson Park Bird Research Station in Toronto had an extremely rare and beautiful Townsend’s Warbler x Black-throated Gray Warbler which was banded in April. This past June I was invited along by the Edmonton Nature Club on a field trip to a Piping Plover breeding site. Bruce Wilson was excited by a hybrid wood-warbler.
