The Cry of the Curlew

10,000 Birds

Here in the Brecks – an area of poor, sandy soils on the borders of Norfolk and Suffolk – we have a small but important breeding population. They favour the old heaths, but a number of pairs also breed on farmland. Brettenham Heath National Nature Reserve holds the highest density of nesting Curlews in the Brecks.

What the rings reveal

10,000 Birds

With its striking combination of colour rings I suspected that it would be easy to find out more about this particular bird, and I was right. Black-tailed godwits winter in large numbers on the estuaries of both Norfolk and Suffolk, and we know that nearly all these birds breed in Iceland.

Lassen Volcanic National Park provides habitat for approximately 216 species of birds of which 96 have been known to breed in the park, including the Gray-crowned Rosy-Finch, which I have yet to see.

Get Your Ears in Shape for Spring with Larkwire

10,000 Birds

I have been meaning to do a full review of the Larkwire app ever since the folks there were kind enough to give me a free download of the app for just that purpose. This will give North American birders, the birders that Larkwire is meant for, plenty to do in the remaining time before the breeding birds come back.
