European Red Foxes were brought into Australia in the 1850′s for recreational hunting and soon spread rapidly. There are wild dogs present and these are not the dingo, but a dog that was also brought to Australia by Europeans in 1788 and has spread throughout the country. They are incredibly cunning and not easily trapped.

The birds are now breeding in the area, but are quite happy to keep coming to the daily feeding station in groups of over 100 birds. In Caines, Australia, we enjoyed a wet morning on the Daintree River, with Murray Hunt, of the Dain Tree River Tours. For me, one of the birds at the top of this last would be the Speckled Tanager.

They range in size from the tiny Fairy Penguin ( Eudyptula minor ) at about 1 kg to the very large Emperor Penguin Aptenodytes forsteri at about 35 kg (that would be a reasonably large dog).
