That larger clade is in turn sister to a clade containing the four remaining totipalmate bird families, which do still seem to be related, and which needed a new order name once pelicans were removed. The one bird I did not see here, however, was the Bateleur Eagle … One highlight in the area is the Saddle-billed Stork , likely to be the tallest species in the stork family. Another member of the stork family, the African Openbill , looks like it is could benefit from a good orthodontist. And sadly, it is listed as Endangered.

It does fit into a medium backpack (though keep in mind that it’s heavy, almost 3 pounds) and definitely onto the backseat of a car. This is a hefty book, 560 pages long and dimensions of 6.3 inches, which makes it just a little too large to be a field guide. The design focuses attention on the photographs.

There is a very distinctive smell found on seabird colonies, where thousands upon thousands of birds come to breed and, coincidentally, deposit large quantities of waste. Notice the correct Farallon Fashion accentuated by contributions from angry gulls. It’s a hot sunny day. Why wouldn’t you wear wet weather gear and helmets?

Not to mention, its brilliantly bulbous crimson throat, bloated during breeding season must be a sight! Green-and-rufous Kingfisher is the only Cholorceryle species I haven’t seen, so observing one would complete a genus in this fascinating family.
