It even seems that the pliant researchers indirectly support the fighting (even though it has led to the species being one of the most hunted ones in that province) by developing a quick method to identify the sex of the bird (the males turn out to be somewhat bigger and thus presumably the more coveted fighters). Shame on the researchers.

A Birder Reads a Scientific Paper

Several years ago, I read about the enormous colonies of breeding birds in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands and I did some research to satisfy my curiosity. ( Google Scholar is an excellent resource and free full-text PDFs can be located for many papers, particularly when research is taxpayer-funded.

National Audubon Society Birds of North America: A Guide Review

Interestingly, Chestnut-collared Longspur does appear under its brand-new official name, Thick-billed Longspur, though the description underneath uses the old name. I am particularly happy to see that the bird communication section includes recent research on singing female birds. These are all informative and current.

National Geographic Field Guide to the Birds of North America, 7th Edition: A Field Guide Review

There are page references to and from the Species Accounts maps, which makes research transparently easy. Looks exactly the same at first until you notice brand-new images of the kite in flight. The wonder of research? We are living in a wonderfully rich world of birding resources. Mississippi Kite, for example.
