Still a notable sighting, however, as this Orange-backed Troupial was a brand new bird for me. A forest trail with enclosing vines and branches on either side gradually ascended to a point where the foliage gave way to giant boulders, and here I immediately knew I was in the right place to see this iconic species. And waited.

Feeding the wrong diet will result in feathers like the ones on the right. On the right are the feathers of an orphaned grackle fed, said the finder, a diet found on the internet.

Like cats, the rat was introduced over much of the world by humans. As for the former, diseases are spread by fleas, which also plague rats, which makes rats as much a victim as humans, and as for the latter, rats are clearly wildlife and how can wildlife be blamed for hurting wildlife? For once, eBird gives a good description of the Asian Glossy Starling, calling it a “Fierce-looking, large songbird” As are humans, this species is fairly urbanized – it “sometimes enters urban areas to roost, e.g. in Singapore” (HBW). In Singapore, Common Redshanks mostly drink Tiger Beer.

The Buff-necked Woodpecker (Taman Negara, Malaysia) is classified as Near Threatened, with the usual rationale of “habitat loss” (which sounds nicer than “evil humans destroying anything that does not immediately bring in money). With jokes like that, Great Spotted Woodpeckers rarely are successful in stand-up comedy.
