Boston Zoo May Close and Kill Animals

Critter News

The Franklin Park Zoo, a Boston institution that has drawn generations of city and suburban families, might be forced to close its doors and possibly euthanize some of its animals as a result of the deep budget cuts imposed by Governor Deval Patrick, zoo officials said Friday. That they care for the species and animals? It doesn't say.

What’s in a Name: Brewer’s Blackbird

10,000 Birds

Blackbirds, as a family, often have those simple descriptive names that are easy to mock ( Yellow-rumped Warbler , ugh) until a non-birder comes describing such a species to you and asking for an ID. Thomas Mayo Brewer was younger than Audubon but less iternant, spending all his life in Boston.

Where Are You Birding This Third Weekend of July 2019?

10,000 Birds

I’m visiting Boston for business, which may disrupt my best birding intentions. Corey, on the other hand, is hightailing it to his hometown in Upstate New York, where he should be able to keep cool and catch a few interesting avian species. How about you? The Warbler Brewery – Warbler Ale

10,000 Birds

I don’t know whether head brewer Chris Schell – a Delmar native with a decade of craft brewing experience – is a birder or not, but each beer is adorned with trippy, vaguely sci-fi depictions of birds by Boston artist Ian Tartasky , some of which seem to be identifiable to species.

The Warbler Brewery – Parula Pilsner

10,000 Birds

So, as I cracked open a can of Parula Pilsner this week, I decided to have a look back at my own history with this species. Since the trippy can art by Boston artist Ian Tartasky is a bit too visually ambiguous for a solid call between Northern and Tropical Parula, we can just pretend it’s whatever species we want.

Where Are You Birding This Fourth Week of July 2017

10,000 Birds

I’m in Boston for a conference and won’t have a chance to enjoy any New England avifauna other than the invasive European species. There are two kinds of travel in this world: the kind where you get to see great birds and the other kind. Right now, I’m in the middle of the other kind. What a waste! How about you?

Where Are You Birding This Final Weekend of July 2018?

10,000 Birds

I’ll be in Boston for part of this weekend. Down in the Big Apple, local birders have been mocking Corey by spotting tasty coastal species that he doesn’t have on his Queens list. So if the birding by you has been uninspiring, just wait. A change is on the horizon. Wish him luck as he endeavors to rectify these insults.
