From Yellow-hooded Blackbirds to Purple and Common Gallinules , there are almost too many birds to focus on! These two Muscovy drakes brutally battled for about ten minutes right in front of us. Commonly domesticated, wild versions of the Muscovy Duck historically inhabited wetlands across Trinidad.

Week 30: We return to Summer Lake

Right, smack dad in the middle of Summer Lake Wildlife Refuge. Not another person for miles, and a pair of friendly, well, almost, Great Horned Owls living in the tree right above us. Hundreds of Black-necked Stilts were around the refuge, this group passed right by me on a short morning walk. Now that is a first.

Farewell to 2020 – Marin Brewing Company: Albion Amber Ale

After a night at the Point Reyes hostel and a long walk to Limantour Beach the next morning, Katherine and I drove into Point Reyes Station for a breakfast of buttermilk blueberry scones at the excellent Bovine Bakery , where the Brewer’s Blackbirds ( Euphagus cyanocephalus ) outside gathered around us and begged for crumbs.

Week 31: Visits to Hart Mountain, Malheur and the surrounding areas.

Then, to finish the week, we visited the famous, and not necessarily for all the right reasons, Malhuer Wildlife Refuge. The first part of the week, we parked the RV at a campground right on the water, of Dog Lake, 20 miles southwest of Lakeview, Oregon. There was a large population of Western Grebes on the lake. The bunny got away.

A visit to Dog Lake

Mule Deer have always been pretty common in this area, but I got quite a surprise when I cleared a small hill in the road, and nearly ran over a male Pronghorn Antelope , right in the middle of the road. Finally we came to a cross road, where I went straight, and he turned right. It was good to be back!

Not sure that I impressed them, I chose to bluff them and looked left and right for a suitable tree branch to pick. Brewer’s blackbird, Euphagus cyanocephalus. Pelican, Pelecanus spp. Red-winged blackbird, Agelaius phoeniceus. Arctic tern, Sterna paradisaea. Barn swallow, Hirundo rustica. Blackcap, Sylvia atricapilla.

Why Hawkwatching is So Awesome

In New York and Connecticut spending hours of my time hawkwatching in all kinds of conditions has allowed me to see some amazing species: Golden Eagle, Sandhill Crane , Mississippi Kite , Gyrfalcon , Yellow-headed Blackbird , Bridled Tern , American White Pelican and White-winged Dove.
