More than 99% of the population of Tricolored Blackbirds ( Agelaius tricolor ) live within the state of California and form the largest colonies of any North American passerine bird 1. After several game drives, once again we are at the front gate of the Gir National Park in the state of Gujarat. This park protects the largest remaining tract of dry deciduous forest in the west of India, offering visitors 37 species of reptiles, 38 species of mammals and, not to be forgotten – almost 300 bird species.

There are the endemics, which are odd in their own way, and then there introduced species, which are so varied in their type and origin that you get the feeling you’ve arrived at the aftermath of a small zoo that escaped. What is surprising is quite how many species did end up here, and how economically unimportant they were.

Out near the tidal flats that make up a good portion of this refuge, there were plenty of Red-winged Blackbirds. Here is one of our pick-a-boo games. For those of you following along on my “ Little Big Year” the numbers are as follows: Little Big Year species – 814. USA species – 111.

Sometimes bird rehabbers who end up with tiny, semi-feathered little mystery birds end up playing a game called “Name That Bird.”. BTW: Type “(species name) baby” into Google Images – do NOT use the terms hatchling, nestling or fledgling, or you’ll never get decent results.” Blackbird mentality. Here’s a gaping shot.

Way, way back, during our inuagural game of Gone Birding , my friend Molly developed a theory of birds. And apparently, non-birders are more apt to divide birds into general kinds than species lists. According to Their Kind Everyone knows this one. There were, in her book, three kinds: Owls, Pigeons, and Ducks.
