Baihualing – The Sequel

10,000 Birds

The scimitar gave the name to a group of birds, the 17 species of scimitar babblers (claims that these birds were named after the Scottish naturalist Edgar Scimitar, 1755-1806, are plainly wrong). Scimitar babblers use these long downcurved bills to work through the leaf litter – they are rather terrestrial birds.

Resolutions for Birding in Costa Rica, 2019

10,000 Birds

I remember it as the one in Niagara where the Arctic would come on down to bring ice for the roads, cold blue for the sky, and, with luck, birds from the north. Looking for Northern Shrikes and redpolls was a test for winter gear and wind chill factors but the birds weren’t going to be there in the hot days of summer.

10,000 Birds

The real upside is that it is right by my house and the Tawny Owls occasionally stray into my oak tree at night. Beginning a Birding Blog

10,000 Birds

Among the things that more and more birders have mentioned to me over the years is their urge to start their own birding blog, but they just don’t know how to go about it. Some people prefer WordPress (which is what 10,000 Birds uses), some people prefer Blogger. Be committed. When there is a will, there is a way.

Northern Australia birding

10,000 Birds

Last month we went camping and birding north of Broome and headed into the Northern Territory in search of some bird species that we had not seen yet this year. It is a great time of year for camping and birding and we had not been beyond Timber Creek in the Northern Territory since 2014. White-browed Crake. Apostlebird.
