Tundra Swan at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge

Late Saturday afternoon a Tundra Swan was reported from the south end of the East Pond at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge. I was psyched to see the one that had been reported but first I had to do some other birding on Sunday morning to keep my year list moving along. Once I got my trip out to Breezy Point (four year birds!)

Great July Birding in Queens

Searching for Shorebirds on the East Pond of Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge

That place is the fabled home of shorebirds, both common and rare, the East Pond of Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge. Saturday saw me squelching through the mud at the north end of the pond and Sunday had me leading a field trip for the Queens County Bird Club from the south end of the pond. Gull-billed Terns are classy birds.

East Pond Shorebirds at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge

When you live in Queens and you only have one morning of an August weekend to go birding there is only one place to go – the East Pond of Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge. Even a bad day on the East Pond in August is better than a good day at other locations that can be reached from Queens or a morning’s birding.
