Usually only several birds overwinter in Serbia – the biggest count ever was less than 10. I observed my first GS eagles in India some 8 years ago, then the first for Europe in Greece only last December , and finally I have them in my home country list. And then a bird of prey appeared in low flight through the tree crowns.

Birding that starts with the largest eagle of the continent certainly bears promises… The next stop is the town park in Opovo, north of Belgrade, where local bird expert Ceda Vuckovic reported one, locally rare, Short-eared Owl. Sakule is almost fully enclosed by its fishfarm and it is a tranquil home for numerous birds.

The intensity of experience is not the same, but, e.g. focusing on a single bird and trying to solve the puzzle… or finding the rarest owl of India , that was a mind-blowing one.

Zlatar in western Serbia, heading towards the town of Sjenica and, behind it, the bridge on the River Vapa. Are we going to bird in the fog? Scanning carefully, small birds occasionally fly from one tree to the other, but I cannot discover them in the foliage! Still, it’s a new bird for my country list. We wait again.

Such a large bird in such a small pool and only the first of many Dalmatian Pelicans I will see that day. The catch is, the station often pumps some small fish into the pool, hence the jolly bird party. The shallows at the place where the river enters the lake – the „delta“, quickly become a heaven for birds.
