During my lifetime, this species was rare in my native Serbia, too. Finally, when our SUV broke down in Gujarat, India, some three years ago, my first two Egyptians were flying above the road! It was not the first note I have published, but was the only one about a bird I have never laid my eyes upon!

Once in Serbia, I tried to follow a group of birders walking over a dry salty crust left behind on an evaporated saline lake. In both India and Botswana, I was at the very edge of the tropics (under the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn, respectively), but in dry semi-desert zones, never deep in the true, humid tropics.

Usually only several birds overwinter in Serbia – the biggest count ever was less than 10. I observed my first GS eagles in India some 8 years ago, then the first for Europe in Greece only last December , and finally I have them in my home country list.

North of Belgrade, Serbia, lies once a vast floodplain (155 mi2 / 400 km2) mostly dried up and turned into a bread basket, but several larger floodzones between the rivers and embankments remain. This is the usual game viewing routine in reserves of Africa and India. In India, no one goes at mid-day because of the heat and the law.

I have observed it previously in India, but never in Europe… but will have to settle with a voice and no sight. As we go lower, from glorious sunshine, we enter the morning fog. In my native Serbia, I observe them every few years, but… I cannot see its bill. Although I have seen the bigger bird in my native Serbia only a couple of times, it is an easy one (and, to make it easier, I observed it often in India – thanks, Chiku): the light morph of the Booted Eagle.

I bought my first 20 years ago from some Russian on the seashore in Greece, but have not used it much because of rather dark images (I even took it to India with me – and didn’t use it even once).
