Maybe the latter is because the bird is so plump, or maybe it is because (at least to me) the head looks like it has been created by a somewhat amateurish wood carver. Another danger to the species comes from lead poisoning as they eat the carcasses of deer killed by hunters ( source ).

Acheron Delta, Greece: Hell is Closed for Renovation

These birds have already left my native Serbia, further north, and this is not just the only one I have seen in Greece, but my last bee-eater of the season. This is possibly the only European wetland I’ve birded where Common Moorhens outnumber Eurasian Coots. Around me is a wet meadow used by the cows whose path I dared to cross.
