Barbets are odd, chunky birds with large beaks. There’s so much more that can be said about this group of birds but that’s the first description that comes to mind. The two families of New World barbets, the Capitonidae and the Semnornithidae, are actually more related to toucans. and the Prong-billed Barbet.

Founded by Roberto Chavarro and his family in the early eighties, this little reserve has been dropped slap-bang into the birding spotlight by the recent claims of the rediscovery of the Bogota Sunangel Heliangelus zusii , a species that is known from one record – a skin from 1909! returned to the USA. An amateur at best.

This bird, of the Turdus family, can be found on the western slopes of Ecuador and Colombia. Black Solitare at Recinto 23 de Junio I have looked for this secretive bird in a few places and finally saw it and photographed last week at my favorite and reliable Umbrellabird site.

For once, I was pleased to see our omnipresent local Ring-billed Gulls this weekend, since I realized I didn’t see a single larid while in Colombia. Corey greatly enjoyed his weekend in the beautiful Catskill Mountains of upstate New York with family and friends.

In addition to Spanish, several other languages continue to be spoken, the pines and cypress trees of the Guatemalan highlands only occur as introduced species once you travel south of Nicaragua, and dozens of bird species that occur in Costa Rica and Panama don’t even make it to Nicaragua.
