Beljarica Backwaters (some August birding here ) is a spacious floodplain of the left bank of the Danube, less than 10 km / 6 mi north of Belgrade, and is an exciting place to bird. Since August 23rd 2022 it has been considered a part of the newly protected Foreland of the Left Bank of the Danube Reserve. sq km / 7.2

Up to the mid-20th century, Pygmy Cormorant was a common breeding species of wetlands around Belgrade until most wetlands were drained and the birds were lost, at one moment – from the entire territory of Serbia. With the construction of the huge Iron Gates dam on the Danube, the birds returned to breed in newly flooded river islands.

Last month, I birded my favourite local patch, Beljarica – the best eBird hotspot in Belgrade city and the 3rd best in Serbia – four times. but because this large spillway protects the city from flooding. One consequence of being near the city is the widespread feeding of birds with what is junk-food for them – bread.

Ten years ago, those flocks were reduced to a few hundred birds. Nowadays, the flocks are even smaller, merely a few dozen birds. As we speak, in Serbia these birds are still hunted in August and September. Since this spring’s revision of the European Red List, the Turtle Dove is listed as a vulnerable species.
