For the White-throated Rock Thrush , Wikipedia gives the slightly puzzling statement “The bird’s population is unknown, but is not increasing or declining.” Even if they look as charming as this Northern Boobook. It does not usually rate high on peoples’ Western Palearctic wish-lists, but Prunella modularis is a dapper little bird with some fascinating habits. Of olde, it was known as the Hedge Sparrow to separate it from the House and Tree Sparrows. Familiarity makes them easy to separate from the sparrows, even at a distance.

The flowering trees are likely to be visited by Plain Parakeets , Swallow-tailed Hummingbirds and Bananaquits while the lawns are always likely to bring a Rufous-bellied Thrush or a Rufous-collared Sparrow. Most of these are very common birds which are widely distributed throughout Brazil. Look out for the Howler Monkeys too.

I did not find much about this bird online except for a paper with the exciting title “A new quill mite Torotrogla emberizae sp. Hopefully, the winter time in Shanghai gives the Black-faced Buntings some time to relax from the challenges of the breeding season. Maybe there is some justice in this world after all.
