Some days ago I had the opportunity to explore the grossly underbirded southeastern corner of Trinidad. With a transit time of at least two hours from any of the accommodations typically used for birding, this relatively pristine area is awash with surprises.

Who remembers birding parties? With some of the beats locked down still, or again, the birding has been patchy. Just under a fortnight ago, I saw a report on the local bird alert of a sighting of a group of approximately 20 Nacunda Nighthawks at a wetland not more than 20 minutes from where I live. It seemed to be good birding judgement to scan the seasonally flooded wetland in the couple hours of daylight available before the storm arrived.

I have been meaning to bird other areas a bit further away but there’s been a string of very interesting sightings in this wetland recently, and each time I go it seems to churn out some other unexpected jewel.

Migration (in particular bird migration) is well underway, however. And when I say bird migration I’m referring to a specific group of birds – shorebirds. A Pinnated Bittern gets escorted to another hiding place by a squadron of Yellow-hooded Blackbirds. For my eBird list , I estimated 150 birds.

As it turns out, many of those very birds that I had hoped to find, all had the same idea, and had moved out of the park as well. I would have to say the most common bird in the park, must be the Common Raven. We picked this as much for the location as its chance for some decent birds. Little Big Year species – 888.

We can use the figures above to compare the birds that cross between the hemispheres. Calle La Trinidad, Heredia, CR (10,022, -84,152). Eurasian Blackbird – Turdus merula. Yellow-headed Blackbird – Xanthocephalus xanthocephalus. Red-winged Blackbird – Agelaius phoeniceus. That’s just 3.35%.

Despite looking way older than his years, we cannot attribute Regannet’s haggard appearance to hard birding, scoring only 19 during eBird’s Big Day was not the greatest effort expended on May 4th.
