In talking to the local guides, and Rangers, they all agreed that they had not been seeing too many species around in the last couple of weeks. You know, the Bison, Elk, Bears and Wolves. We did not ever see a Grizzly Bear, but we did see a Black Bear , although it was way too far away for a picture.

It bears mentioning that the name of the series doesn’t refer to the physical dimensions of the featured species, but the size of the tiny black-and-white illustrations of each bird. It’s the least I can do for a species that’s caused me almost no identification angst over the years.

We had persevered through four years at the top of Battery Harris Platform and could bring our experience to bear on the task of trying to record as many species as possible on a single day from that single spot. At 8:30AM we were already at 53 species and we knew we still had many more easy birds to find.

She doesn’t know the species till it emerges, almost dreamlike, from the heavy glare of the sun. Though the coast of British Columbia, a part of the Great Bear Rainforest, was rich in both, it was appallingly deficient in scientific data. Fox encounters 69 species, some singly, some in huge feeding or migrating flocks.

I have gotten to the point where there were very few waterfowl that I need for my years’ list, but I was able to add Canvasbacks , and Cackling Geese. I had missed the Greater White-fronted Geese all the way up the coast, and saw that a single White-fronted had been observed on the refuge. Finley NWR.

Swan : “any of various large heavy-bodied long-necked mostly pure white aquatic birds (family Anatidae, especially genus Cygnus ) that have webbed feet and are related to but larger than the geese.”. Many individual species get an entry too, though they are generally not capitalized.
