Good Birds on the Queens County Christmas Bird Count

10,000 Birds

Clapper Rail , American White Pelican , Snowy Owl , Cackling Goose , Blue-winged Teal , Bald Eagle , Lark Sparrow , Clay-colored Sparrow , Pine Warbler , and Turkey Vulture are all good birds for the count. We found three Bald Eagles for the count, but only one of the Willow Lake birds and it was at Meadow Lake.

Why Hawkwatching is So Awesome

People whoever they are (even the most experienced of hawkwatchers) love Bald Eagles – it’s just a given. In my experience if you show a non or novice birder their first Bald Eagle and they will be amazed, show someone their first Thayer’s Gull and they aren’t likely to gasp (sorry, larophiles)!

Catching the End of Migration on the Hugh S. Branyon Backcountry Trail

We were only a few miles from shore, so watching Ospreys and Bald Eagles return with fish from the Gulf was fascinating, as were the Double-crested Cormorants and Brown Pelicans that periodically flew overhead. Red-headed Woodpecker. Still, I wanted to see something particular, something colorful, something migratory.

Waking to Bird Song at T.H. Stone Memorial St. Joseph Peninsula State Park

Overhead soared a Bald Eagle , Great Blue Heron , and Osprey; in the pines twittered Carolina Chickadees, Brown-headed Nuthatches , and Tufted Titmice. Brown Pelicans and Double-crested Cormorants flew near the surface. After rolling out of bed, my husband and I opted to explore a trail that began just behind our campsite.

Exploring East Bay and the Yellow River

Brown Pelicans were the most numerous birds, flapping against the wind, diving for lunch, or floating along on the gentle waves. We watched a Bald Eagle soar on the warm updrafts over the marsh, while another actually stood on a mudflat, looking for prey.
