Besides the American bison that the refuge was founded to protect, there are pronghorns, elk, bighorn sheep, mule and white-tailed deer, and black bears. This was not a very successful prank, especially since we had just encountered a large cinnamon-colored black bear which was much more interesting, even to a birder.

My attention was drawn upward by the elegant flying-knife form of an Osprey bearing a large fish. The Ravens – at least, I presume they were the same pair – swept into view again, this time engaged with a different foe – a juvenile Bald Eagle. This is something to bear in mind when reading fables.

We also spotted Raven , Bald Eagle , Black-billed Magpie , and the inevitable Canada Goose. Sometimes a little too confiding, like the Wild Turkey that wandered out into the road in front of us and brought us to a stop for nearly a minute. Mammals were mostly represented by Mule Deer and a handful of debatable Elk.

I did manage to get a few Surf Scoters, my first Bald Eagle of the year, Pelagic Cormorants , and an unlikely pair of Western Grebes out in the middle of that rough water. It did not get better once we left the small amount of wind break that the adjacent sand dunes provided. Finley NWR.

Unlike what you may have read, real rivers bear us ceaselessly into the future. The Bald Eagles that nest along the river had apparently had a very poor breeding season, the high water making their usual fishing spots less productive, so the ornithologist told me; we only saw one of the adults.

Though the coast of British Columbia, a part of the Great Bear Rainforest, was rich in both, it was appallingly deficient in scientific data. She’s described conservation successes in detail–the Bald Eagle, the Short-tailed Albatross, now protected in Japan. And, this was badly needed.
