Peregrine Falcon in Broome

On December 7th an odd looking Peregrine Falcon was observed in Broome at the Sports Ova l. In Australia we often observe Peregrine Falcons and they are the subspecies Falco peregrinus macropus. The Peregrine Falcon at the Sports Oval has been perching on the light towers and is easily observed, but it is a long way up.

Brown Falcon foraging after a bush fire

A Brown Falcon flew into the parking area and immediately we were drawn to its actions as it turned over the leaves in search of any small creature that was weak or injured by the recent bush fire. Brown Falcon in the car-park. Brown Falcon turning leaves. Brown Falcon. It was being rather successful too!

A nature lover’s highway

We are still all forbidden from leaving Australia and most people are cautious about going interstate in case the borders get closed again. Alongside the Black Kites and Whistling Kites we observed a Brown Falcon and a soaring Black Breasted Buzzard. Brown Falcon. Swamp Harrier -note the dragonfly in the bottom photo!

Like the Australian Ringneck (Alice Springs, Australia). A minor variation is a name starting with Australasian, as in Australasian Darter (Brisbane, Australia). In contrast, Albert’s Lyrebird (Lamington National Park, Australia) is named after Prince Albert, the husband of Queen Victoria. But my photography was worse.

One more bird species with serious talons in the north of Australia! Raptors are well represented in Broome with Black-breasted Buzzards , White-bellied Sea-Eagle , Nankeen Kestrels , Brown Falcons , Australian Hobby , Spotted Harriers and Swamp Harriers all observed regularly around the area.
