The Common Gallinule , is the most wide spread of all the members of the rail family, being found from Canada, to Chile, Europe, Asia, Africa, much of the Pacific, and the Galapagos Islands. When I read somewhere that Pygmy Geese were not actually geese at all I started doing some research. For these birds, the smallest of all waterfowl, belong to the “perching duck” group. I discovered that there are actually a fair number of ducks and other waterfowl that are wrongly called geese.

In fact some of our group decided to head back to camp. The 4,400 square kilometre Hemis National Park is the largest park in the whole of South Asia.

I was fortunate to spend time scanning open fields, wetlands, and the inlet separating Hong Kong from China with this large group of friendly and avid avian observers. Do your research. We dipped on the latter and only caught sight of a distant group of 7 or so lapwings once we had given up hope. So don’t be afraid!

In the back of the book are three indexes, scientific and English names, Thai bird names and bird groups listed alphabetically. Or tertiary. Or who cares.
