The Amusing Case of the Gulf Breeze Zoo Canada Geese

10,000 Birds

While I harbor mixed feelings about zoos in general, this facility seems to make the best effort possible to keep animals in interesting enclosures, move them to different areas of the zoo to maintain novel surroundings, and invest money and space into a 30 acre mixed species enclosure, where the animals can move freely.

The Gas Station Bird

10,000 Birds

Here’s a quote about bird lungs from Britannica: “Himalayan geese have been observed not only to fly over human climbers struggling to reach the top of Mount Everest, but to honk as they do so.” The bird is a captive-bred Peregrine/Gyrfalcon hybrid owned by people with an Exotic Species Permit.

Going Medieval: Waterfowling the Two Towers of Serbia

10,000 Birds

Actually, I visited the Two Towers twice, had about 50 bird species each time and about 60 in total, so this is sort of a composite tour description. Grallards: New Zealand’s Next Extinction or Newest Species?

10,000 Birds

New Zealand had, once upon a time, some fairly spectacular game birds, including massive flightless geese, massive flightles rails, and really enormous moa. Allagash Brewing Company: Uncommon Crow

10,000 Birds

And I think it’s safe to say the other two North American crow species aren’t showing up in New York any time soon. It’s entirely possible that I’ve just given some adventurous craft brewer a really bad idea, though it certainly wouldn’t be the first or even most questionable use of animal ingredients in brewing.
