How many people know this about the Animal Welfare Act? No wonder there is so much "farm" animal abuse out there. Humane treatment runs counter to the entire industry when the point is to make money by processing these animals as fast as possible. According to the United States Department of Agriculture, “farm animals are regulated under the Animal Welfare Act (AWA) only when used in biomedical research, testing, teaching and exhibition.

Ontario Animal Welfare Law Goes Into Effect

The provincial government says it's gone from "worst to first" and Ontario is now the only jurisdiction in Canada with special protections for law-enforcement animals like police dogs and horses. The legislation also imposes new rules on the province's dozens of roadside zoos, giving the Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals the right to inspect them. Pet owners convicted of a crime under the act can also be barred from owning any animals for life.

I live in Seattle and I am always skeptical of how the UW treats its lab animals. A national physicians group has filed a federal complaint against the University of Washington, saying its use of ferrets to train medical residents in emergency procedures on babies and children violates a federal animal-welfare law. says only about 13 percent of the pediatric-residency programs in the United States use animals for such training.

"Zoo from Hell" Owner Convicted in New York

A farm-animal breeder who ran what a prosecutor called "the zoo from hell" was convicted Tuesday of animal cruelty. A jury in West Haverstraw deliberated less than two hours before convicting Robert Everle of all 13 charges of torturing, injuring and starving animals. State police raided Everle's property, 30 miles north of New York City, in July, and witnesses testified that they found several animals dead, many malnourished and dozens living in unsanitary conditions.

Ringling Brothers Wins Court Case Over Elephant Abuse

City of Albuquerque Being Sued for Trap-Neuter-Release Program

From the American Bird Conservancy : The mayor of Albuquerque and the director of the city’s animal welfare department have been named in a lawsuit alleging that the officials have committed animal cruelty by allowing certain illegal and improper animal management practices to occur related to abandonment of stray cats. Britton’s lawsuit claims that the abandonment constitutes cruelty to animals as defined specifically by Albuquerque ordinances and state law.
