Mangrove Birds of Costa Rica

Fortunately, the few remnant areas of mangrove forests in Costa Rica receive a certain degree of protection by either being included in official protected areas or because of legal protections provided to forest. Such protection is vital for this pair of mangrove specialists because they are barely hanging on.

Living in central Mexico, I’m not a big fan of random encounters with passersby. This has determined which places I visit, and which I avoid.

Looking for Lost Warblers at Parque Rio Loro, Costa Rica

In Costa Rica, those would be the wood-warblers that do a lot more wintering in the southern USA and the Caribbean than in southern Central America. Established to protect a watershed and used for environmental education in the eastern Central Valley, Rio Loro has a few nice trails, picnic tables, and even has a small canopy tower (!).

La Paloma, The Doves of the Baja

The country of Mexico as a whole, is host to 27 different species of doves, with the California Baja Sure home to six. While the White-winged Dove is a resident of the southern half of the US and all of Mexico, in the past few years it has been expanding it territory north towards Canada. I guess they like the area as much as I do!

The “Turkeys” of Costa Rica

This spectacular, turkey-like bird roams the floor of tropical forests from eastern Mexico south to northwestern Ecuador. In most countries, long, sweaty, expedition birding is required to see the only curassow species in Middle America. It also ranges widely from Mexico south to western Ecuador. Ain’t I great?
