Plumaged like various other small female hummingbirds from North America, the lady Snowcap is pale gray below, pale glittering green above, and with a tail that flashes bits of white. Oh yes, change is a-comin’ Crimson-fronted Parakeet ( Aratinga finschi ), Moravia, Costa Rica © David J. In fact, the two groups appear to belong near parrots and passerines, which are now thought to be sister clades. I think this proposal has a good shot at passing, at least in South America.

Then I spotted an easy and obvious one, the Black-eared Wheatear , while the group climbing the steep hillside found the Rock Nuthatch , as well as the Rock Sparrow , striped, pale and indescribable. Patrick got a very good bird for Costa Rica as his Best Bird of the Year…though the circumstances made it bittersweet.
