My wife and I had the chance to visit Alaska! The Alaska wilderness lives up to the visions we had. The wildlife was what we expected. Although they were not there in late September, I now know where Whimbrels, Surfbirds, and Wandering Tatlers breed. Alaska was incredible. Northern Hawk-Owl.

Fish and Wildlife Service has listed the “Rufa” population of Red Knot ( Calidris canutus rufa ) as a threatened species under the Endangered Species Act (ESA). There was a bounty on them in Alaska from 1917 until 1952—up to $2 a head! In my home state, Bald Eagles are breeding in 35 Ohio counties. Hunting eagles will not hurt, but enhance non-consumptive wildlife viewing opportunitites. These passive wildlife enthusiasts like to go places, especially in winter, to watch them.

Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge, Queens, NY, 3 August 2008 It was while watching flocks of shorebirds on Friday on Cape Cod (an adventure I will soon describe) that I first heard of a Red-necked Stint being found at Jamaica Bay. They both breed in Siberia, which is pretty far from Jamaica Bay. A quick word about both of these birds.

On Sunday, 5 June, word of Jay McGowan finding a Gargeney at Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge in western New York State hit the listservs. There are quite a few records from Alaska, mostly in fall, and a scattering of records on the east coast, mainly in spring. Its a Eurasian bird, migrating from Africa and south Asia every spring.
