There was a bounty on them in Alaska from 1917 until 1952—up to $2 a head! Hunting eagles will not hurt, but enhance non-consumptive wildlife viewing opportunitites. These passive wildlife enthusiasts like to go places, especially in winter, to watch them. Imagine big flocks of Bald Eagles massing on our wildlife refuges.

This particular figure was carved by Richard Ludwig “Fresh Air Dick” Janson, a legendary California carver who earned his nickname in his days as a seafaring fisherman in Alaska for his strange penchant for sleeping on the main deck no matter the weather. But there’s more historical cachet to this story than an artfully carved model duck.

On Sunday, 5 June, word of Jay McGowan finding a Gargeney at Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge in western New York State hit the listservs. There are quite a few records from Alaska, mostly in fall, and a scattering of records on the east coast, mainly in spring.
