I felt especially thankful for the cooler air while boarding a touring boat at the Weeks Bay National Estuarine Research Reserv e along the coast of Alabama. Far better just to stay inside and write about birds! As a kid, I took the fact that Blue Jays were found at our feeders in winter and in our woodlots in summer as evidence that they were simple, sedentary birds. But that’s sort of cheating. New York City makes it clear that this isn’t quite correct.

Since I live so close to the state line, it’s only natural that I do some of my birding along the Alabama coastline. I did a little research, and came across good birding reports on Gulf Park, so to Gulf Park I went. To bird, my husband and I focused on walking the Hugh S. The birding wasn’t half bad either.

At first glance you might not recognize this bird as a Golden-crowned Sparrow ( Zonotrichia atricapilla ). It is an immature bird with an indistinct yellowish forecrown with dark stripes on its crown (click on photos for full sized images). Resources: 1 Birds of North America Online.

For reasons no one fully understands, much of Mississippi, Alabama, and inland Georgia lack Painted Buntings during the breeding season, a gap of several hundred miles. Eastern birds are thought to winter in Florida and the Caribbean; western birds, in Mexico and Central America, but winter distributions are not yet fully understood.

Oil on the beaches of Gulf Shores, Alabama I covered the spill for several months for a special TV series on the Gulf Disaster. Oil begins to wash up on the beaches throughout May and June of 2010 May 6, 2010 Oil washes ashore on the Chandeleur Islands off the Louisiana coast, an important nesting and breeding area for many bird species.

Other reminders of December in Costa Rica are palm trees festooned with Christmas lights, an abundance of annual bird counts, and sightings of winter birds like gulls, ducks, and a scattering of Yellow-rumped Warblers. Personally, I had a year accompanied by a blend of changes and birds. It has been good, I am grateful!
