World Sparrow Day 2012

Quarantine Twitch for the Best Backyard Bird

Typical of the species. The last time I had seen a Summer Tanager was during a Christmas Bird Count in 2012. Both species seemed content to observe each other though. Hopefully they found a suitable place nearby to raise the next generation! This young male Summer Tanager didn’t linger or waste time.

Big Year Birding Update

Seeing as it is near the midway point of the year I thought it would be nice to check in on how the blogging Big Year birders are doing thus far in 2012. Josh Vandermeulen is sitting pretty at 317 species for the year in Ontario, only 21 off the province’s record of 338, set by Glen Coady in 1996. It’s quite a list!

Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve: the Tiger Afternoon

The closer one raises her head, than lies back. Telia watches him in half-amusement, then raises and gives a low, bull-like roar, provoking the lapwings to an excited screech, makes a few steps and lies down. Telia yawns, raises and sprays her urine on a dead tree stump, marking her territory. The other two are motionless.

Pied Oystercatcher breeding season 2018

This year is the eighteenth year since we discovered our first Pied Oystercatcher nest on Cable Beach in Broome and it didn’t take us long to realise that they are not at all successful at raising young due to egg and chick predation. He last raised a chick successfully in 2016 and has nested in this area since 2008.
