Some animals are injured and killed by wildfires. A fire might kill weak birds or, depending on the time of year, claim nestlings. This was the case in the 23,958 acre Reading Fire that burned in Lassen Volcanic National Park in 2012 where I photographed this Black-backed Woodpecker. So what do these facts mean for our wildlife?

The starving young male had been rescued from the side of a road, recovered at my house, then went to my rehabber friend Lisa’s for live prey training, where he sharpened his skills until he was a mouse-killing machine. For my new book, due out in 2012 from Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, I’ve been researching sandhill crane hunting. Kills in Canada, Alaska and Mexico are not included in the count. Texas and North Dakota together account for 88% of the total yearly kill of sandhill cranes. Tennessee found that out in January. But is this for real?

As it is critically endangered (there are only about 100 left), I think it can be forgiven for killing the occasional Pale Thrush (which is listed as Least Concern). Unfortunately, Hen Harriers die disproportionally near British Grouse moors – most likely killed illegally by people hunting grouse for sports ( source ).
