Razorbills ( Alca torda ) have invaded the coastal waters of Florida on an unprecedented scale this December of 2012. To put this invasion into perspective, there were only 14 documented records of Razorbill for the entire state before December 2012.

This chapter also covers vagrancy in social migrants, and why vagrancy is common in ‘obligate social navigators’ like geese and cranes, a thought which got me thinking of all the times I’ve searched for one Barnacle Goose amidst hundreds of Canada Geese. Next time, I’ll know why.

My first year on eBird, 2012, exactly 20 people submitted checklists for the entire state. They breed in northernmost Canada and Alaska, and winter in Patagonia in southernmost South America. I am not very good at learning to ID birds by song or call. But my home is not in the U.S. or the U.K.; 1st Hudsonian Godwits in central Mexico.

For my new book, due out in 2012 from Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, I’ve been researching sandhill crane hunting. Kills in Canada, Alaska and Mexico are not included in the count. The Sandhill Crane is no different than the Aleutian strain of Canada goose. Canada Geese and Crows can figure it out, so can Cranes.

Pat O’Donnell was hoping for 600 species in Costa Rica in 2012 and he was at 539 in June and easily cleared 600 but I am not sure what his final total was. Did I miss anyone? Any doubt I had about the need for a book about rare birds in the United States And Canada were wiped out on a Sunday evening in early February with two birding friends. The authors set June/July 2011 as the cut-off date, and were able to add noteworthy records up to November 2012, the date the manuscript was sent to the publisher.
