Open Season on Bald Eagles

Bald Eagle image is by Francois Portmann and is used with permission You know, I’ve been thinking about this whole dustup over hunting cranes in Tennessee and now Kentucky. And while we’re at it, I think it’s time to open a limited season on Bald Eagles. We’ve always hunted Bald Eagles. I get it now, I really do.

Once upon a time in Bojcinska Forest

Gazetted as the “nature monument” in 2013, one of the few remaining – Bojcinska Forest by the village of Progar covers 670 ha / 1650 ac, with around 108 bird species and some 60 species of mammals. Then in 2011 the foresters planted wheat, and after deep ploughing wheat was left to rot in the ground, with acorns left to sprout.

This species prefers swampy habitat and I don’t think the creek was appealing enough to keep it around.

2011 is about to become 2012 and birders the world over are taking a look at their year lists and reminiscing about the awesome sightings and devastating dips that they have experienced. This year I watched them from the day they arrived , until two chicks successfully hatched, the northernmost breeding record for the species.

I Remember Elephants

We are facing a plague of poaching that is again decimating the species. A different research says, from 2002 to 2011 the known populations of forest elephants declined by 62%. The way I see it, it is a cruel joke leading towards the extinction of a threatened species. In Africa, one elephant is being killed every 15 minutes.
