My librarian self is partial to a more strict taxonomic organization, but with no hope that the constant shifting of families will end in the near future, this type of sequence is making more and more sense. as Birds of Europe, 2nd edition (PUP, 2011). The chapters, however, offer very good introductions to each bird group.

Not to mention, its brilliantly bulbous crimson throat, bloated during breeding season must be a sight! They really appeared to enjoy this, because as soon as they swam back to the rocks they would line up again to repeat the experience. Wrynecks are fascinating because they are woodpeckers, taxonomically and evolutionarily, yet they do not share many behaviors and anatomical features of most members of the Picidae family. But they are woodpeckers: the genus Jynx of the subfamily Jynginae of the Picidae family. They are beautiful, but in a different way.

I started the year in Florida, traveled to India with the ABA in February, combined family and birding in an August trip to California, and in-between saw very good birds in New York and New Jersey. There is no experience comparable to birding a dump, and, I have to say, I have never experienced a dump like this one. 6) Garganey.

As 2013 draws to a close we here at 10,000 Birds thought that it would be a great idea if we, like we did in 2010 , 2011 , and 2012 , shared our Best Birds of the Year. Red Knot XS41059 was banded as a 1st year bird on September 11, 2011 near the town of Tain in the Scottish Highlands on the south shore of Dornoch Firth.

I haven’t done any surveys, but I would bet my binoculars that images and stories of hawks attract more attention and adoration from birders and the average person on the street than any other bird family. Families do not hike up mountains to sit all day on pointy rocks to watch woodpeckers. Those cameras are aimed at hawks.

Besides the urgent need to identify my dragonflies, I was interested in hands-on experience using these field guides. It covers 63 odonate species: 44 breeding species (19 damselfly, 25 dragonfly), and, in a second part of the Species Accounts, 19 vagrant, potential vagrant and former breeding species (5 damselfly, 14 dragonfly).

I strongly suspect that the rate of attrition on this Loon family is inversely proportionate to the abundance of ducklings in the bay. Non-bird watchers without binoculars and experience are notoriously bad sources of information. Sometimes that one reaches adulthood, but just as often it disappears. More alarm calling. Apparently.

Late last year we decided to meet up with my sister and her family in Western Australia and we reached an agreement that they would fly to Perth from Sydney during the school holidays in January. A family of Buff-banded Rails escaped into the vegetation ahead of us and they must have arrived with the first of the rains to breed.
