Birding Porto Lagos Lagoons, Greece, or the snake-cold Vergina lager

All around Porto Lagos (220 km / 140 mi east of Thessaloniki) lies the largest national park of Greece, Nestos Delta and the Vistonida-Ismarida lakes and lagoons complex, founded in 2008. Dalmatian Pelicans and Eurasian Spoonbills were flying above the beach, sometimes above the hotel garden, while Golden Oriole and Scops Owl could be heard.

What Birds Will Get Me To 300 In Queens?

Black Vulture - Despite a marked increase in Turkey Vulture sightings – nine since March of 2011 when I had my first in Queens - Black Vultures remain stubbornly absent from the borough (only two sightings reported to eBird in Queens since 2008). The S nowy Owls at Breezy Point also ignited a firestorm on the state listserv.

A New Bird (for Me) in Queens

After all, I have lived in Queens since 2008 without any luck finding one here so why should 16 February be any different? Once we got out onto the beach we spotted a Snowy Owl which, this year, is completely unexpected. I was hopeful about finally checking it off my Queens list but not overly so. Bird number 303 for me in Queens!

Madagascar’s Lost and Found

Then rumors leaked out that at this same site the mythical Red Owl could easily be seen, Madagascar Serpent Eagle was breeding and other rare birds and lemurs abounded. As you can imagine, I was champing at the bit to get to this lost paradise and when I finally obtained the necessary permissions in 2008, it didn’t fail to astonish!
